The Fantastic Seashell of the Mind
Mark Mills is one of the Taliesin apprentices who succeeded to create a remarkable independent career and designed a host of inventive and unique houses. Janey Bennett covers the architect’s life and work in a way that is readable and meaningful for a non-professional reader, but at the same time, informative and interesting for an architect reader. The Seashell theme and imagery tie the individual projects into a continuous narrative, and the towering figure of Frank Lloyd Wright is given a proper role, without, however, dominating the scene.

Priests ride mopeds, goat rustlers wear ski masks, and a groom flees his wedding ... nothing is as it seems in Janey Bennett’s ambitious, action-packed first novel, set on the island of Crete.

Janey Bennett has written an excellent and beautifully illustrated tribute to a fine architect whose work will now be, as it should be, more widely known and appreciated. The author’s insights into Mills’ creations, combined with the sumptuous photography, make for a book to be treasured.

  • The Fantastic Seashell of the Mind
Since the founding of the Taliesin Fellowship in 1932, Frank Lloyd Wright trained hundreds of architectural students. Few of those exhibited the natural talent and skill of Mark Mills. In Fantastic Seashell author Janey Bennett gives us a unique insight into the world of this heretofore almost unknown figure of Organic Architecture. It's a must have for any serious scholar or the armchair devotee of American Architecture.

This book is terrific! The bio and historical anecdotes are really interesting as well as being warm and human. I got a real sense of the man and the time. The photos are awesome. It feels like—and is—an important piece of our architectural history that might very well have fallen through the cracks. Very well done!

    The Pale Surface of Things
I really liked the narratives involving a number of characters. Indeed, I was happy to ‘meet’ such an interesting cast ... Although foreigners talk about the so-called ‘simple life’ of villages, The Pale Surface of Things makes it clear that village life is anything but simple.

Resonates with vitality and authenticity. The story is suspenseful and the dialogue reflects the true voices of the villages of Crete.

A novel that combines the fast-forward movement of a thriller with the authenticity of place and human frailty of literary fiction.
